All that is Unsolved in the Heart

All that is unsolved in the heart, sits locked up and waiting like a little child who sits and waits for the school bus to take her to new learning adventures. Like the earth we hold all the burdens and flubs that human kind can dish out over centuries yet goes on through each day, sunrise and sunset. With each step taken we receive a little hint or nudge or feel the wind at our backs. We fail to remember we have all the answers. They just lie waiting for the right moment to reveal themselves. And so we go along and hopefully, as we move forward, we are remembering, unfolding, unfurling like a spring fern curling out from its late winter bed, where it rested for some long dark months.
Love the short days of Winter. A time to rest and ponder...here's a song for you. Enjoy...Layers~by Singer-Songwriter, Lynn Hollyfield

Quiet Our Wants

Quiet our wants….hmmm. Sort of like when you were little and someone would look and say ‘shhhhhh!’ That surfacing of desire and feelings quickly dampened by a cold look or inconsiderate ‘shhhh.’ I’ve spent a good chunk of this life trying to figure out what is right or wrong. When to run with my wants or those of others. Many hours racing around to help someone while mine were quieted, in the corner, waiting for some unknown time.  Being raised to serve others is a good thing but not when you give every last bit of yourself until there’s nothing left to give. To let your needs go so far down to the bottom of the barrel where it gets so dark you can barely see them anymore, is a silence that dismantles. All that time waiting until someone sees in your eyes that you have needs too. It’s that someone who tells you ‘no’ when you offer to help because they can see you need to rest. And the many signs come, like the tears that flow so easily just from a regular conversation or the beauty of a clear day. That’s when I know my cup is full and I step back to look and shine the light down, inside the barrel, to find what s left of me.

Calm vs Chaos

Calm vs Chaos
Sometimes you just need to step away from the chaos of broken water pipes, a home that could use a good cleaning and a couch with a mountain of laundry waiting to be folded.  You get in the car, pick up a friend and drive to do an errand to pick up your most precious guitar all fixed, just waiting to play ideas yet to spring from fingers and mind. But before that, there’s time to wander, at ease and ply through bins of  chicken beads, chicken-music pillows and even a magic egg. Trying on outfits with the kindess of a friend saying “well, if you get that top you may have to wear it with pants like these.” Neither of which would have worked. Further meanderings led us to little frog and cat purses with zipper mouths, pillows made from sweaters, exotic Egyptian purses and sock monkey shopping bags. Each step of the way our gaze was drawn to someone’s gift of making the world a little bit better. There were wooden pallets hung on walls with cacti and hens and chicks filling the gaps, moon flower and morning glory planters gracing street corners and a bench made from old fence posts and varying lengths of wood boards. Throw in a few cups of Middle Eastern tea,  real talk with a friend and paper mache kites and you have a soul restored. Returning home the house seemed a little cleaner, the timing of turning on the well pump to bring us water seemed more synchronous and even the mountain of laundry~not so daunting. I think I’m going to sew today.

Lynn Hollyfield: In The Balance (title track)

It's been about two months of having the my new recording in hand and I think about this song, In The Balance, that became the title cut. We all have tons of things we are juggling. I wanted to write a song about balance, so I asked the question, 'Is it possible to find balance in life?'  Once I asked, I had so many messages coming my way, I was able to  finish this song. I'm listening and laughing to myself because I have to remember to listen to my heart....enjoy!

Intricacy vs. Debris

Last night, the stars and I, waited for a meteor shower never seen before, from a comet that existed way before we were on the earth. ‘Debris’ doesn’t seem like the best word to describe an event so intricate. You need a perfect word for these miraculous particles that were once the tail of comet zooming through the universe for over a century and a half of time. Part of a comet, that knows parts of the universe, will touch our atmosphere, grace our eyes and grant wishes to those who are fortunate to see. The dark, deep blue of night sprinkled with constellations named by of those before us trying to make sense of it all. After a day of feeling like my sense of direction was off, miscommunications and reminders of our delicate, nostalgic hearts, the delight of reading about the anticipated Camelopardalid meteor shower was all I needed to know things are going just as they should.

Come Inside

To come inside, a door has to open and depends on how heavy and how long it's been shut. But when something or someone is calling you to do so, listen and pay attention.  The way will become clear.  After an experience at a Native American ceremony, a forgiveness ceremony that truly changed my life, doors opened with the remembrance and sacredness of being human. There are times we hurt others and times when others hurt us unknowingly or with intent.  Once we accept this and forgive ourselves and others a huge, a rock solid, heavy door can fly open like a screen door blown open by a brisk, Spring wind. Doors have many ways in and many ways out.  Invitations come to go inside where it can be warm and cozy or to a dark, deep place, not often visited but holding wisdom if you are willing to go there. Hinges creak, locks get stuck, keys are lost and often the location of the door in unknown. When we are listening, traveling, walking, running, shifting, often then we find a door not seen before but now right smack in front of us, just waiting for the knob to be turned and the lock to be unlatched. What doors are being opening?  Which ones are left closed? I wonder how many have not been found yet. Only ours to know.

Two Years and The Journey by Mary Oliver

Two Years
In two years, where will I stand?  My oldest will be off in college and youngest just starting HS. Life will certainly roll on with bills to pay, laundry and such. But what about the real? What about the dreams? What about the love? What will be moving through my veins to help  me create?  What instrument will entice me to learn a pretty melody and sing a new song? In two years, will I be stronger in spirit and mind and body? These winter stars are seemingly more bright and clear.  With persistence, they pull to tell a story.  I find myself, under them, in the cold early morning quiet, as I walk to start the fire in the cottage.  I can't help but stop, gaze up and breathe.  Breathe deeply.  In goes the cold, winter's air full of the beauty of every early morning sky. Many mornings I have stood and gleened and wondered. I hope in two years there is more time to take in these precious, fleeting moments of time that work my roots and reveal my place. A place of vastness and unknown, of opening and understanding, of passage and movement...of love. The birds are sounding their morning calls. Today it is more a disgruntled bird song to accompany the sudden cold and icy rain. Yesterday's melodies had been sung as they would in early Spring. The robins had come yesterday only to go today, somewhere, to wait out the storm. Sort of a false start to Spring and new beginnings.  Wanting to initiate but needing to wait until all is aligned. Two years, seems like a long time but the way the last one flew by, it will here before we know it. And me? I want to  pray and work with an open heart, mind with intent to give-to find my place in the world.  Happy New Year everyone! (Inspiration from writing prompt-Peggy Tabor Millin and reading a Mary Oliver poem-Journey -read on)

The Journey by Mary Oliver

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice--
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles,
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop
You knew what you had to do
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do--
determined to save
the only life you could save.

The Journey

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice--
though the whole house

and you felt the old tug

"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.

The Perfect Gift

Early Sunday morning. No color in the morning sky but a pale shade of gray.  This blank canvas is the backdrop to bare trees, naked as they wait for the coming storm. The dark branches are still and sturdy.  A welcome respite, for the birds that are flying furiously to find food before the snow begins to fall. Squirrels chatter as they compete for the feeder filled with hearty sunflower seeds from seasons past and I wait. I wait in morning stillness, filled with warmth, like the morning fire stoked up and warming the hearth stone for the day to come.

This morning time is nudging me to be still, live still and breath in stillness.  Whenever this winter's cold stops me in my tracks it also pushes, like a hard, relentless wind, and makes me stop and reflect back over the year. I hear it telling me to rest and slow down. Scurrying about, it's easy to lose site of the spirit that comes in this very moment, to each and every one of us this season, only if we let it. The dance of balance to be in the moment versus time to reflect.

Yesterday, my heart was filled with spirit.  A plentiful day that brimmed with discovering creations, made by someone else's hands.  Creations that all started, when a spark from some distant, swirling inspiration touched and moved them to create.  From an open heart into creative hands, transformed to beauty, only to be let go, into my hands, for me to give, from my heart.

Real talk and spending the day with a great friend made ever fleeting time, last and stick and create a lovely memory to be held this whole holiday season and in ones to come. That to me was living in the moment for the whole day.  This was the true gift.  The one that feeds my soul, inspires and helps me know everything is all right.  The truest gift, a real gift, the perfect gift.

Flooded

Flooded…filled up and overflowing with great things and not so great things. That delicate balance we try for as life sends us on an unexpected turn that brings us back to 'real' and what's important. Yesterday, a day that started out with a full docket of catching up and the usual chores…a run to the grocery store, some laundry (always!), tidying up the house, pull a few weeds, write a set list for an upcoming concert and some paper work all before a swim team banquet.  Only, a major diversion occurred. It started with a call to tend to someone in need which put most of these things aside or lightly touched not to be touched too soon. Things were flooded.  But this time I felt like I was suspended in a whirlpool, with all things swirling and floating around  me, not far but still out of reach.  Last night, as things were overflowing.  I knew to hang on  until the waters subsided.  Sometimes, that's all you can do.  Just before I was going to tuck myself in, I looked up at the beautiful rising full moon behind a hazy, summer night sky and I was reminded....I'm here, in the right place and the right time and part of something much bigger than I can imagine.....

Cawfee talk for a real, 'Real Feel'

Yesterday, I started the day with two of my dearest friends.  We call it 'Cawfee.'  We rarely drink coffee when we get together but we know what it means when we see it in the subject line. 'Cawfee.' It's our time, a time we make, for ourselves, together, to check in with each other, share, dream, cry, laugh, hug and love each other as the three of us try to figure out life.  I'm so grateful to these two for helping me work through tough times and the nudges they give me to look a little deeper.  When I do and the tears fall, they are right there to catch them.

The topic of 'self love' came up.  This is written so beautifully...Check out this link: http://bonesigharts.blogspot.com/.  I think I still have a long road ahead in this department but taking time for 'cawfee' is a step in the right direction.  Taking time-what I often feel I have not enough of.  There is no question, that the time I take for 'cawfee' is well spent.  A stepping stone, a great big, huge stepping stone in the right direction...going to hold this with me.

Crooked

Crooked: something bent, not straight, twisted and misaligned.  Not truthful, not open or upfront. Does life get this way sometimes when we continue to brush things under the rug and not communicate and then when we do the perceived straight path goes into some jagged, crooked, crooked road that we don't even recognize?  Loosing ground beneath our feet and feeling like we've taken so many steps back after working so hard to make the ones that brought us forward. Commitment to doing what is right, making good choices so as to not hurt someone else or yourself.  Crookedness is a barrier, a big hurdle to jump over rather than become or go through because it tears down all you've built in time in a  split second and leaves you feeling less than you are.  Part of humanness.  When you do something wrong and need to build back up, it builds strength, courage and determination. It builds compassion for others going through their crooked paths.  I'm jumping over it and leaving it all behind for working with all that has been given  me…all the gifts of my family and the people in my life, my inner gifts and love I have deep down that will pull me out of this dark feeling that I'm bad, not good enough and always doing wrong… some old belief pattern instilled when I was a young girl or perhaps a past life.  I do good in the world and will continue to do good, without hurting others.  This is the road I walk.

Have a great one...

A Voucher*

A promise of something to come later, that's not quite ready, but you've earned it.  A gift of sorts, packed in waiting.  The contents dictate the longing for, the anticipation of, the expectations of what will be fulfilled when presenting it for an exchange. The end result of negotiation.   She knew she'd have to hold this for a long time, but there was no expiration date.  It may get tattered along the way, forgotten and tucked away in a box for some rainy day perusal.  But there was one stipulation. It can be traded in, only when the time is right for all and the stars are aligned.

*I'm trying a morning writing practice and the past several posts have been from prompts by Peggy Tabor Millin, Clarity Works, Inc.  Check her out. Enjoying this and it's becoming a part of the day I really look forward to!

Supposed to….

Woke up to unfolded laundry on the couch, a semi clean kitchen and week of new assignments for work, plus juggling Driver's Ed classes, swim team practices, meals, tending the miraculous garden and feeding all the critters.  Yet here I am writing, to start my week with words, ones that will inspired me to keep focused on a truer path, full of heart and soul and love. No blue skies this morning…The woods are still, against a white dawn sky…more rain today after the buckets that poured down last night.  The lush green, swallows me up, so rare for mid July here, so unlike the years past in drought.  There is a gentle flicker of movement as two birds find there way back to their nest.  As I must soon go to tend mine…the gentlest breeze enticing the leaves to move as I watch their subtle shimmer of them holding on to the drops of last nights rain.  Holding on to the beauty as the nudge of the percolator and time on the clock push to organize for tasks ahead, I hold the lush green stillness inside.

Shattered

Shattered
Life is fragile. We  wake up each day with all our dreams, thoughts and jobs in our back pack, thrown in with a bit of inspiration and head out for the day.  Keeping it all positive and open always feels best…seems things flow and connect and are on the same wavelength. Then why do we get so sidetracked by someone who must start their day very differently? Is it the challenge before  me  that sets me on a mission to try to help them see another way-that desire to help them, cause life is too short to live such a negative, narrow spin?  We've all been there in that closed, dark space where we seem to not be understood or heard.  And what rescues us? A stranger's smile, an offer to help, a kind touch, a hawk flying across our path, a lovely memory, a friend who sits and listens? Or simply waking up the next morning, determined to live a better way; to see the beauty in things…even in the challenges that brought us to this place where we stand, right now.  My teeny world and the confrontations I encounter are so small yet feel devastating at times.  But when I peel back and reach deep down, I know what I want to create, I know how I want to live and I know what I need. Today, I'm setting out with a lot of belief that life is to be lived to it's fullest, that every moment is precious, that love surrounds us all and can be seen if we remain open and focused.  Pieces are coming back together, determined not to be shattered…thank you beautiful, blue skies this morning!

Whistlin' and Fishin' in Heaven

It would be 28 years ago that my Dad left this planet….he was 59 and I was 24.  I can't believe so much time has passed since that night.  My brother Rob and I sat up with my Dad.   I had my guitar in hand and we sang every Harry Chapin and John Prine song we knew.  The one that sticks the most in my memory is 'Fish and Whistle.'  A great John Prine song that just fit the closeness of that moment, of just being there, not knowing when Dad would slip away.  The chorus: "Father forgive us for what we must do; you forgive us, we'll forgive you.  We'll forgive each other 'til we both turn blue and we'll go whistlin' and fishin' in heaven…"  My Dad loved  to fish and it was just the perfect song other than when I woke up in the middle of the night to give Dad a dose of pain medicine and heard Jackson Browne's "Rock me on the Water" only to find Dad had passed on into the universe.  Thinking of you, Dad,  and I smile with the thought that you are 'whistlin and fishin' in heaven.' Miss you…
I wrote a song for Dad a few years back: Another Time  (it's the last song down the list...take a listen if you have a chance at this link:  http://www.reverbnation.com/lynnhollyfield/songs  )

Late Summertime....

A beautiful late summer morning...I love this time of year....something shifts at the beginning of August and I feel kind of lost but there are signs of things slowly but surely coming into place...things that have been stirring deep and are all starting to come together.  Chinese Medicine talks about the 5th season of Late Summer....a time of transition...the change from the long, hot summer days as we move towards the beginning of Autumn.  There's also a kind of melancholy that comes...I wonder if it's a throw back to the feeling of the summer ending and having to go back to school.  We have a hickory tree in front of our house.   It's peppered with red leaves and every now and then sends one floating down and they land on my car.  I'm reminded of the change as I head out from home and the leaves go flying and are scattered once again...sort of how I feel....focused and ready, then flying and scattered....ahh the beauty and mystery of Late Summertime.  Late Summertime is a song I wrote on one of these beautiful late Summer days...take a listen when you get chance~www.reverbnation.com/lynnhollyfield.

Morning with two friends....

Just in from a morning of listening, dream interpretation, talking, planning and dreaming with the two friends in my life that have helped me through, time and time again.  Some people come into our lives in ways we could never imagine and we certainly couldn't have predicted where we'd be in future years or that the events and choices we've made in our three lives would plant us down here, together, around a table, spilling our fears, joys and dreams.  It's the stuff that keeps me going, it gives me my daily dose of soul food and raises my energy to pull my scattered being back to center, regain my balance and take that next step forward.  My tired self that woke up way too early this morning, was magically recharged and here I am writing this first blog entry…long overdue in my mind but somehow, here and now, feels right and good.
